David Rogers

I'm a plant ecologist by training, my specialty being the long-term dynamics of plant communities. At Parkside, I teach courses in Environmental Science, Biology and Conservation. I also have a long-standing interest in agriculture, wild crafting, permaculture and just generally sustainable living. To merge these two interests, I have been working strategically to develop the capacity to produce food, forest products and restoration materials from our campus lands and integrating that into the curriculum.

UW Parkside is a regional branch of the University of Wisconsin System located between Racine and Kenosha. I work with the biology & environmental studies programs, both residing in the College of Natural and Health Sciences. The university's new Master Plan calls for the establishment of about 70 acres of dedicated outdoor lab space to support teaching and research. We about 1/2 acre under cultivation for the community garden (36 gardeners last year) and additional 1/4 acre dedicated as a native plant nursery. In addition we have several hundred acres of upland and river bottom forests in various stages of succession, which are available for study and experimentation.
